Strategic Planning & Visioning

Count on me to help you translate the many threads of your work into a plan or a vision you feel proud of.

Strategic planning is a process where a group or organization maps out its goals over a set period of time (e.g. 1 year, 3 years, 10 years, etc.), and determines the steps it will take towards achieving them, as well as the resources that will be needed. Part of this process includes outlining smaller goals, timelines, and measurable benchmarks that will allow the organization to see its progress. It may also include activities (for example, power mapping, SWOT analysis, skill inventorying, etc.) that allow the group to develop a shared understanding of its strategy and resources clearly before establishing goals.

Visioning is a process that brings people together to develop a shared vision of the future. For example, a climate justice organization might gather to articulate what a world with certain climate policies might practically involve, or a group of student activists could spend time envisioning what an accessible, inclusive, and democratic version of their school might include. Visioning helps groups paint a detailed picture of what success would really look like, beyond abstractions and vague ideas. This can be a helpful exercise in pointing a group towards what its medium-term goals should be, or to build a sense of shared excitement about the mission of an organization or campaign. Visioning can also include shared work towards articulating the mission and values of a group or organization.

Both strategic planning and visioning are best accomplished when all decision-makers are able to gather, ideally in-person but possibly virtually, for a significant chunk of time. This might look like a series of 1-day gatherings, or a 2-3 day retreat.
